Hello ,
Zacharias was participating in the "offering of incense" at the temple. Offering
incense was considered to be the most sacred and important part of the daily morning and evening sacrifices, and Zacharias had received the opportunity to perform it by the "casting of lots."
According to Jewish tradition, the priests that were present in the temple would stand in a semi-circle while each would hold up one or more
fingers to be counted. Naming some number, the "president" of the priests would begin counting around the semi-circle and continued counting until the number selected indicated who was to be chosen for this holy duty.
Because of the vast number of priests during this time, it is possible that a priest might only be able to
receive the opportunity to offer the incense but once in his lifetime. The offering of incense was a time of prayer, and as the incense made its way from the golden alter, it symbolized the prayers of God's people ascending into heaven.
This rich picture allows us a tiny glimpse of just how amazing God is. Zacharias is administering one of the most important, and awe-inspiring offerings,
(a job that he has cast lots for,) and God is working to reach out to him with a very special message, in a very special way, as he performs this sacred duty.
God often lines up "divine appointments" for each one of us, in what may seem to be an ordinary day. Being open to His will gives us the ability
to embrace holy "opportunities" to experience (and help others experience,) His amazing love.
Zacharias is about to receive a message from God that will "rock" his world. We'll talk about that message in tomorrow's Open Word.
Have a great day and God bless!
