Postal service letter carrier Fernando Garcia went above and beyond the call of duty when he encountered someone on his route that needed help. Garcia told reporters, "When he turned around, I saw that he was holding his left arm. And he was just covered in blood."
The man Garcia encountered had accidentally gashed his arm attempting to use a chainsaw, and was in dire need of first aid. Thinking quickly, Garcia removed his belt and used it as a tourniquet to help limit the bleeding until first responders arrived. He got the idea from similar scenes in movies. According to the LA County Sheriff’s Department, Garcia’s proactive help led to the man being given a good prognosis for
recovery.
According to his niece, the man has already been released from the hospital and is gaining mobility in his injured hand. A Postal Service statement said, "We are very proud of letter carrier Fernando Garcia and thankful for his swift, heroic action in helping a customer in dire need of assistance. Our postal carriers truly are the eyes and ears in the community.”
"In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." Matthew 5:16 (ESV)
Letting our light's shine may not be as dramatic an affiar as this mail carrier, but each of us can allow our Creator to help us be a blessing to someone, each and every day.
