Hello ,
Tim Keller offers the following definition for what Jesus meant by being "poor in spirit":
It means seeing that you are deeply in debt before God, and you have no ability to even begin to redeem yourself. God's free generosity to you, at infinite cost to him, was the only thing
that saved you.
There are some people who call themselves Christians these days, that seem more "middle class" in spirit than they are "poor in spirit." They feel that they have reached a certain spiritual status by all the hard work that they have performed, and that the blessings that they have received are "due" them.
It is only when we recognize that we are utterly and totally bankrupt without God, that we can begin to understand what it means to be "poor in spirit." Every good gift comes from Him, and our eternity depends upon His goodness.
Let us not forget this amazing transaction today. It is because of God's goodness that we are even alive, and because of His incredible love that we have been offered eternity. Now that's good news!
Have a great day and God
bless!
