Hello ,
It's the first day of November, and when we arrive at this day of the year, I usually begin to think about the upcoming two months ahead. My favorite holiday happens this month, and I almost always get a bit nostalgic during this time of year.
Growing up in rural New York State, I recall that the month of November was always a busy time for the household that I grew up in. The entire month was usually spent in preparation for the winter to come, by cutting, splitting, and stacking firewood in our woodshed on the side of the house. My dad would always say, "Cutting wood warms you twice. First when you cut it, and then when you burn it." We didn't have much in terms of material
possessions, but we had each other, and we enjoyed the friendship of good neighbors and a loving family.
The month of November always made me more aware of how much we really had to be thankful for. Things that I used to take for granted as a child have taken on a different light as I grow older. Wood smoke curling from a chimney on a frosty
evening, the fragrant smell of homemade bread wafting through the air, and the settled feeling that the chores were done for another day.
During the month of November most of the Open Word e-Devotionals that you receive will be about thankfulness. The God that we serve treats us better than any of us deserve, and it's a great time to dwell on
the idea that we should be more thankful to Him than we probably are.
Every good things that we enjoy in this life is a gift from God, and it is because of His daily mercies that we are able to live at all. Let's enter this month with thankful hearts as we prepare for the next season to come.
Have a great day and God bless!
