I'm amazed at the number of people who actually believe that they can somehow earn heaven by being good people. A number of years ago, some friends and I went from door to door in a city asking the following question: "How does one attain eternal life?"
More than 90% of
the people that we asked this question to gave the following answer: "By being a good person."
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." Ephesians 2:8-9
Jesus was very clear that heaven is never earned. It's not possible. It has to be a gift. Our job is accept the gift, allow it to change our lives attitudes, and live in grateful awe of a God that loves us that much.
