Hello ,
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3)
I’ve pondered for a long time in my adult life, “What DOES someone who is poor in spirit look like?
What are the attributes of that condition, and where does God fit into the picture?
I haven’t come up with an exhaustive list yet, but here are a few ideas.
-
When I realize and recognize that I bring absolutely nothing to the table in terms of righteousness.
-When I admit from the depths of my soul that He alone can bring me the desires of my heart; and, that I can’t even admit THAT without His help.
- When I put away the self-righteous swagger, and humbly agree that the answers I need don’t come in neat little packages; they only come when He brings them.
- When I arrive at the stark realization that everything I’ve attempted to fill that “hollow” place inside my heart with, STILL doesn’t make me feel “whole” as a human being.
- When Jesus becomes more than a last resort; when He becomes as important to me as the air that I breathe.
- When I recognize my utter, eternal lost-ness without Him.
- When I internalize that “following my heart” doesn’t necessarily equal “following the correct path.”
- When I am admitting that I am morally bankrupt, and that without Him, everything in this life is temporary.
Being “poor in spirit” doesn’t look “spiritually wealthy,” but it is the richest position that a God-follower can be in.
Have a great day and God bless!
