Hello ,
For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win the more; and to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might win those who are under the law; to those who are without law, as without law (not being without
law toward God, but under law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law; to the weak I became as weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. 1 Corinthians 9:19-22
This time of the year, I always witness televangelists
railing about the evils of Halloween, and how Christians should never allow themselves to be a part of the celebration.
Although I agree that this holiday is not something that I wish to involve myself with, I also think that we need to temper that position with love, care, and concern.
This passage in 1 Corinthians 9 rings true with me on the days when I can't find agreement with the world. Paul didn't always agree with those that he was reaching out to, but his approach was always to seek love and understanding.
Tonight, you may have small children (and their parents)
approaching your door, looking for a treat that gets tossed into their Halloween bags.
Ask yourself, "What is the very best way for me to convey the love of Jesus Christ to someone who may not understand?"
Should we respond with lectures about the evils
of this holiday?
Should we shut off the lights in our homes and pretend that no one is around?
Or, would it be better to greet people on our
porches with love, care, concern, a healthy snack, and maybe a little piece of material that talks about God's desperate love for people just like them?
I know what my position is on the subject, and if your position differs I can respect that. Whatever our approach is with others during this holiday, let's make sure that it is bathed in prayer and love.
Have a great day and God bless!
